Loved this one too, Jenn! I felt the tension so vividly. I initially thought the story might unfold into a classic ex-wife/ex-girlfriend dynamic, and I loved how much deeper the tension traced through your relationships. The ombré metaphor throughout is lovely — how transitions can be messy and beautiful at the same time. Looking forward to reading more of your essays. Krisztina W

Thank you so much, Krisztina! I’m really touched that you took the time to read this one too. It means a lot that you saw the complexity in the relationships and connected with the ombré metaphor. Are you a writer too?

I do write as well, and I learn so much from reading other writers’ work. I haven’t published anything yet, but your essays resonate deeply with what I’m working through.

I thought so! ☺️ Your comments show such a careful, thoughtful reader—I have no doubt that translates to your own work. If you ever feel like sharing your writing, I’d love to read it.

Thank you, Jenn — your encouragement really means a lot to me. I’m still early in my writing journey and working on developing my craft. Reading essays like yours has been part of that. If you ever have suggestions for communities or ways to grow as a writer, I’d love to learn from your experience. 🌸

I’m so glad! Honestly, I’m still figuring out the community piece myself—that’s something I’m looking for too. What’s helped my writing most has been developing essays with the intention to submit to literary magazines rather than publishing immediately on Substack. That shift let me go deeper and spend more time revising, and the editorial feedback from lit mags has been really valuable.
